The Changing Workplace

Beyond averages: trust, mentoring, and the real value of office space. In conversation with Dr Nigel Oseland

Space Solutions Season 2 Episode 3

Joining Phil on his latest podcast is Dr Nigel Oseland, workplace researcher, strategist, author and lecturer to name but a few of his titles.

Following the publication of his latest research in conjunction with the British Council for Offices (BCO) ‘Review of Post Pandemic Office Utilisation’ Nigel talks about looking beyond average data towards a more nuanced approach when making decisions based on utilisation levels.

Attracting people back to the office is not as simple as providing cracking aesthetics. If we want the space to support the generation of new ideas, for building trust within our people and for developing junior colleagues we need to consider attendance flexibility but also accommodating many of the activities for which people find their home space is more functionally suitable.

Nigel’s latest book looks at Post Occupancy Evaluation (POE) which he likens to an MOT, a regular feedback mechanism on how well your space is performing and an opportunity to tweak and make improvements as your organisation evolves. Nigel provides practical advice to occupiers on how to introduce a balanced approach to this, how and when to implement these.
